Gov. Tate Reeves has reopened candidate qualifying until Monday for judge in Circuit Court District 5, Place 2, which includes Webster County.
Candidate qualifying was reopened as a result of the untimely death of incumbent George M. Mitchell Jr. of Eupora, who was the only candidate for circuit judge that qualified for the Nov. 8 general election for this position.
In the coming days, Reeves will make an interim appointment to fill this position pending the results of the Nov. 8 general election, according to a Friday news release from the governor’s office.
Other counties in the 5th District are Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery and Winston.
Mitchell died April 19 at age 77 at a hospital in Northport, Ala, after surgery. He had served more than six years as a state circuit judge.
