A fantastic tennis team tennis season came to an end on Monday for East Webster, but Webster County isn’t finished competing.
The Wolverine tennis squad was in Vicksburg Monday with a chance to win a state title in a matchup against Sacred Heart before falling short in a 5-2 match. Coach Robbie Brown was happy for his team to get the opportunity to compete for it all.
“I’m so proud of them and I can’t tell them enough. I reminded them that there are a lot of schools in the state of Mississippi that would like to swap places with them. I expected a good year, but this far exceeded the expectations that I had and I’m sure theirs too. I could get used to this,” Brown said.
“We had a shot for a little while, but the better team won. They had their lineup set nicely and they played better than us. I wish I could have played them (Tuesday).”
That finished out the season for the team, but both EWHS and Eupora competed on Tuesday for individual state championships. Eupora had three events with players competing in starting on Tuesday morning as Kaitlyn Edwards and Ava McCain took the courts in girls doubles. Lillian Winter is one of the top girl’s tennis players in Class I and had her shot to compete for the girls’ singles title while Cliff Jernigan competed for the boys singles.
For EWHS, Cooper Stidham and Jailyn Brock took the courts for mixed doubles and boys doubles players Jackson Brown and Mason Brand represented EWHS in boys’ doubles.
“I can’t say enough about how hard they stepped up. We fought to get a chance to be here. Mixed doubles won the district and I’m anxious to see how we match up,” coach Brown said. “We won’t know until we get there and get on the court and I’m looking forward to staying until Wednesday and possibly winning some state championships.”
The individuals needed to win two matches on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday. Champions were crowned later in the day on Wednesday after press time. The Webster Progress will have a full report on the results in next week’s edition.
