If you were dreaming of a white Christmas -- then you got your wish, just a few weeks after Christmas.
As many commemorated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., Mississippi was hit with an arctic front that brought in snow, freezing rain, and sleet, which caused problems for those trying to get home or make it to work Monday and as of press time, Tuesday continued to cause issues.
Choctaw County Emergency Management and Civil Defense Director Brent McKnight said Tuesday morning that all roads and bridges in the county were iced over. As temperatures rose Tuesday, it caused another issue for refreezing and turning the sleet into solid ice.
Monday night, Choctaw County looked like the winter wonderland many had hoped it would be during Christmas.
As of press time Tuesday morning, almost every county in the state with the exception of those located closer to the coastal region experienced some sort of winter weather as the arctic front swept through the state.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported one winter weather death in the state in Humphreys County.
The release stated that a “weather-related death had been reported to MEMA due to a vehicle accident by the Humphreys County Emergency Management Office. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a crash on January 14 around 7:59 p.m. on Highway 49, just south of Silver City.”
And, as of press time, it’s forecasted to continue until Friday, with temps getting a little higher.
Many businesses and schools closed due to the cold day and students were able to experience an extended Martin L. King, Jr. Day, as the weather was watched for the rest of the week.
