“Bob Langley is an unsung hero,” said Mike Forster, President of the Winston-Louisville Airport Board.
Langley was recognized at a Feb. 24 Experimental Aircraft Association event at the airport for his 35 years of service to the airport and local aviation. The event and dedication of the second floor observation deck at the airport were to honor the Langley's legacy.
“He greets every plane and always asks 'how can I help'. He smiles and shakes every hand," said Dr. Sam Suttle, who is a pilot and has a plane at the airport. "He is a great ambassador for the city and airport."
Langley has worked or helped around the airport for over 35 years. He has washed airplanes, loaded, unloaded them, served a pilot, a co-pilot, worked as the airport’s manager and all round helper.
Forster noted that Langley has impacted a lot of peoples’ lives, including his.
"My first flight was with Bob Langley," said Mike Forster.
The airport manager role is a nonpaid role at the airport but what Langley does for the airport is more valuable than gold to many.
“He encouraged people who were trying to fly and I would fly anywhere with him,” said Joey Patridge, a pilot in Winston County.
Many other pilots in attendance told stories of flying with Bob Langley and how he helped them many times over the years.
"A lot of people would be stranded at the airport when they flew in if not for Bob," said Dr. Mark Donald, a local pilot. "He is always wanting to help and has made sure plenty of pilots and others had a way into Louisville when landing here late at night or anytime."
Dr. Donald added, "He has the heart to help."
Langley thanked all for the honor and having the observation deck named in his honor.
About 35 people attended the event for Langley and gave praises to Langley, Forster also pointed out that many pilot and flying websites lauded Langley and his efforts with such comments as: “He’s a hero of mine".
