From the recent Lights, Sirens and Hometown Heroes, the Spring Break events through the week, or just their weekly events, there’s always something happening at the Choctaw County Library. And you don’t have to go far to find something creative to do.
The Library offers several classes and events throughout the week, here are just a few of the things the Library offers:
Writers’ Meeting
If you have a passion for writing or have always wanted to start, the Choctaw County Library has the perfect opportunity for you. Every second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m., the library hosts its monthly Writers’ Meeting, an open and welcoming space for writers of all skill levels and genres.
This gathering is a great way for local writers to connect, share their work, and gain valuable feedback in a supportive environment. Whether you're working on a novel, short stories, poetry, non-fiction, or even just journaling, this meeting provides inspiration and encouragement. The event is open to the public, and no prior registration is required, just bring your creativity!
Each meeting typically includes discussions on the writing process, opportunities for sharing work, and sometimes fun writing prompts to spark new ideas. Participants can choose to read their pieces aloud for feedback or simply listen and absorb insights from fellow writers. The group embraces beginners and experienced writers alike, making it a great way to learn from one another.
If you have a story to tell, a poem to share, or just want to meet like-minded individuals, mark your calendar for the next Writers’ Meeting, every second Thursday at 6 p.m. For more information, call the library at (662) 285-6348.
Chair Aerobics
This weekly class provides a safe and welcoming space for older adults to stay
active without the strain of high-impact workouts. Using a chair for support, participants
engage in gentle movements that promote flexibility, strength, and coordination. The
exercises are designed to be enjoyable while also helping with mobility and stability,
important factors for maintaining independence as we age.
Whether you’re looking to enhance your fitness routine or simply want to try
something new, Senior Chair Aerobics is a great way to move your body in a supportive
environment. There’s no need for prior experience, and all fitness levels are welcome.
The class is free and open to the public, so bring a friend and make it a social outing!
Participants are encouraged to bring their own water to stay hydrated throughout the
session. Comfortable clothing and supportive shoes are also recommended for the best
experience.
Staying active is essential for maintaining health and energy, and this class offers
a wonderful opportunity to do so in a relaxed and friendly setting. If you’re looking for a
way to improve your balance, build stamina, and enjoy a little movement, join us every
Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Choctaw County Library. For more information, stop by the
library or call (662) 285-6348.
LEGO Club
LEGO Build and Play is more than just stacking bricks. It encourages children to
think critically, solve problems, and express their creativity in a hands-on way. Whether
they want to design towering castles, speedy racecars, or entire cities, this event offers the
perfect space to dream big and build even bigger. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for kids to
collaborate, share ideas, and make new friends.
This event is free and open to all elementary-aged children. There’s no need to
bring anything—just come ready to play and create! Parents can watch as their children
bring their ideas to life, or simply enjoy some time at the library.
If your child loves to build, imagine, and play, don’t miss out! Join the library
every Monday in Weir at 3:30 p.m. and every Tuesday in Ackerman at 3:30 p.m.
Silver Social Club
Seniors looking for a fun and relaxing way to spend their afternoon are invited to
the Silver Social at the Choctaw County Library! Held every first and third Friday of the
month at noon at the Ackerman Library, this event offers a wonderful opportunity for
fellowship, laughter, and engaging activities.
Silver Social is a laid-back gathering where seniors can enjoy board games, bingo,
puzzles, or even a movie. The library provides all the games, films, and puzzles, so
participants just need to show up and have fun! Whether you enjoy a friendly round of
Scrabble, the thrill of bingo, or the challenge of a jigsaw puzzle, there’s something for
everyone.
The event is completely free and open to the public, making it easy for anyone to
join. There’s no need to bring anything, just come ready to enjoy an afternoon of fun and
friendship. Whether you come for the games, the movies, or just the conversation, you’re
sure to have a great time.
If you’re looking for a way to stay social and entertained, mark your calendar for
Silver Social, every first and third Friday at noon at the Choctaw County Library.
