WPT Staff Report
WALTHALL — The Board of Supervisors had an emergency meeting this morning, Jan. 23, to coordinate plans for Webster County’s response to the incoming winter storm.
The board, by unanimous motion, issued a proclamation of existence of a local emergency for a 30-day period commencing at 3 p.m. today (Friday). The declaration proclaims that all county agencies and departments will render all possible assistance and discharge their emergency responsibilities as set forth in the county’s Emergency Operations Plan.
Representatives of the Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management Agency and the 911 Center discussed their plans for providing assistance and any needed support from the supervisors. The need for communication between all was stressed.
A main concern was to ensure that officials and emergency responders check on the elderly, disabled and homebound throughout the county during the duration of the severe weather to see if they are safe and warm.
John Dendy, 911 director, said he will message responders to use caution when on the road. EMA Director Barry Rushing asked everyone to keep emergency responders and residents in their prayers.
“I think we’re as prepared as we can be,” said Board President Pat Cummings. “We’ve got a fine staff.”
The Eupora Civic Center will open at 3 p.m. today to serve as a warming shelter for any residents in need of a warm space.
