The Town of Noxapater had much to discuss on Tuesday, July 2, at the regular monthly business meeting. Mayor Sammy Carter brought forth an issue that could prove to be major if not corrected soon. A bat colony has taken up residence at the water tower in Flower Ridge, and Carter noted that this must be dealt with immediately. Carter noted that he had spoken with the County Extension Agent, Jim McAdory, and City Clerk Faye Ellis spoke with someone at Mississippi State. This led to city officials speaking with a professional who carries out bat removal. Carter shared the cost of the removal, including placing a structure which would allow the bats to fly out but not return to the tower. Carter noted that they are a protected species and the town must follow certain guidelines when removing and cleaning up the roost. A member of the audience suggested the town contact a former employee of the MS Dept. of Wildlife, who works with bat rescue. The member said she would provide contact information for the individual, and city officials noted they would contact the individual regarding the situation. With July comes budget talks for all counties and municipalities, and City Clerk, Faye Ellis, reminded the board that it was not only time to revise the budget, but to add anything they might need for the upcoming fiscal year. A city employee noted that a new clipper is needed. He was told to get prices and submit them for approval. Another important point was brought by the city clerk. A report showing how many unpaid bills left when renters leave a property was brought forward; this report showed that the total exceeded $20,000. While the board came to no solution, they did agree that the topic deserved further discussion. Mayor Carter also heard an update on the search for another police officer in Noxapater. The mayor has applications on his desk and will continue to search. The board would then review bills to be paid, and all were approved for payment. The board also accepted and approved the minutes of the June meeting. The Town of Noxapaterís Board of Aldermen meets on the first Tuesday of each month at City Hall.
