New Salem Church, formerly known Salem United Methodist Church in the Spay-Panhandle community is the third church to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church.
In last week’s Choctaw Plaindealer, it stated the church was closing. But members of the church clarified they aren’t closing they’ve decided to disaffiliate. During the Mississippi United Methodist Annual Conference on June 27 through June 30, New Salem Church, along with Wesley Covenant Church and South Union Church and Campground chose to disaffiliate from the denomination.
In total, almost 200 churches disaffiliated with more to come as Bishop Sharma Lewis has called a special called meeting in December for the purpose of those churches who wish to disaffiliate. For those who want to stay connected to the United Methodist denomination in Choctaw County, can search our church page for the remainder of the United Methodist churches or begin what’s called a lighthouse church.
