Storm clouds hung over Winston County and Lake Tiak O’khata early Saturday morning. Lightning prompted officials to call for a brief delay to the first portion of the Heart O’Dixie Triathlon that is held annually during the opening weekend of the Neshoba County Fair. However, the rainfall would ultimately fail to prevent the event from taking place.
The triathlon begins in Winston County, where participants swim in Lake Tiak O’khata before grabbing a bike and peddling more than twenty miles into Neshoba County. Individuals from across the country come to participate in the event in addition to those from Winston and Neshoba County participating.
One notable participant from Winston County is Dr. Michael Ard, who participated in all three events (some may opt to participate as a team with each member taking an individual role, whether that’s in swimming, cycling, or running). Ard was also the first place winner in his age group.
Cyclists left the Lake and made their way down Highway 15, arriving in Noxapater around 7:15. Members of the Highway Patrol would serve as escorts for portions of the cycling event; private citizens on motorcycles would also lend a part in providing safety to the cyclists. However, they still braved busy traffic on Highway 15 as they crossed the county line, heading to the Neshoba County Fairgrounds.
The overall winner of the event was Jay McCurdy of Starkville. Other local participants included Maben’s Jim Ray and Kaitlin Ray and Eupora’s Claude Hearard.
