Growing up, I always looked forward to running to the mailbox to read Sports Illustrated. Well, the famed magazine is reportedly no more after laying off just about their whole staff. The first edition on August 16, 1954, showed Milwaukee Braves third baseman Eddie Matthews in action against New York Giants pitcher Wes Westrum with plate umpire Augie Donatelli. SI started the famous swimsuit edition in 1964 that became their best seller every year. But the other 51 weeks of the year featured iconic sports photos such as the great heavyweight boxing championship fights between Joe Frazier and Muhammed Ali. Our Mississippi sports heroes Charley Conerly, Archie Manning, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Steve McNair, Brett Favre, Eli Manning and Dak Prescott were just a few who graced the covers of the famous weekly. Two memorable covers are from September 14, 1970, which sported the the “Idol of Mississippi” in Archie Manning, and from October 8, 2014, which featured the State and Ole Miss celebration in “Mississippi Mayhem” as the Rebels downed No 3 Alabama and the Bulldogs upset No. 6 Texas A&M.
The NFL championship games are set for Sunday. The AFC title game will have Kansas City visiting Baltimore while Detroit will travel to San Francisco.
