The Army and Navy contest never disappoints, and last Saturday was no exception. “The Long Gray Line” of the Army cadets held the Midshipmen on a fourth down play inches from the goal line with three seconds to play to preserve a 17-11 win for the Cadets. The Army also claimed the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy that goes to the team with the best record in head-to-head matchups between the three service academies. The Army had beaten the Air Force last month.
LSU’s Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy, edging out Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. All three quarterbacks were transfers. Daniels passed for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns and had only four interceptions. He rushed for 1,134 yards and ten scores. Daniels is the third LSU player to win the Heisman since 1935.
The South came from behind to edge the North, 20-15, in the annual Bernard Blackwell Football Classic played in Gulfport. The North jumped out to a 15-0 lead before Damyrion Darby of Jefferson Davis County returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the opening half. Brandon's Landon Varnes passed to Petal’s Cayden Burger for the winning score with less than five minutes to play. Burger was the South Offensive MVP while Picayune's Jabari McWilliams was the South’s Defensive MVP. Union’s Keon Hutchins was the North’s Offensive MVP and Vicksburg’s Tyler Carter was the North Defensive MVP. The South leads the series 37-29-5.
It will be the best against the best this week from Alabama and Mississippi in the 37th playing of the MS/AL All-Star Game to be played Saturday at noon at the University of Southern Mississippi. Alabama scored two late touchdowns in Mobile last year to take a 14-10 win over the Mississippi Stars. Alabama leads the series 25-11 and has won the last three contests.
College basketball is up and running and the three Division 1 schools in our state have started out with a bang. The Ole Miss Rebels (9-0) are off to their best start since the 2007-08 season and are only one of seven teams in D-1 without a loss. This Saturday, the Rebels travel to San Antonio to take on California in the Hall of Fame series. The Lady Rebels (6-3) will host Valley this week. The Mississippi State Bulldogs (7-2) romped over Tulane this weekend and will host Murray State on Wednesday and will travel to Tupelo on Sunday to tangle with North Texas. The Lady Bulldogs (8-2) will host Jackson State on Thursday night. The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (5-4) held off Northwestern (La.) this past Saturday and will travel to McNeese State this Wednesday night. The Lady Golden Eagles lost for the first time, a two-point defeat, at Memphis, this past Sunday. The Lady Eagles will not see action until December 20 when they head to Fort Myers, Florida as they face Cleveland State and Florida Gulf Coast. A special shout out to William Carey coach Steve Knight, who is in his 42th year coaching the Crusaders. William Carey is off to an 8-2 record and will end the 2023 portion of this year’s schedule with road games at Faulkner State and New Orleans this week.
Mississippi State’s record setting Jake Mangum was traded from the Miami Marlins organization to the Tampa Bay Rays last week. The all-time SEC hit leader was drafted in 2019 by the New York Mets and has played four seasons in the minor league.
Shohei Ohtani has agreed to a record breaking $700 million, ten-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani has played for the cross-town Angels for the previous six years.
William Carey soccer lost in the NAIA Women’s National Championship game to Cumberlands, 3-2, on penalty kicks. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and two overtime periods. The Lady Crusaders finished with a 24-1 record on the season.
