East Webster baseball coach Jordan Smith is the head coach for the District 4 team at the State Games of Mississippi in Meridian and has four Wolverines on the team. He is assisted by Cody Silver, his assistant at East Webster.
District 4 began play in the double elimination tournament with a game against District 8 from the Gulf Coast Tuesday.
East Webster players on the team are outfielder/first baseman Wes Silver, outfielder Cameron Pilgrim, infielder Jace Grantham and pitcher Gray McCarter. All four will be seniors in the fall.
Silver batted .508 with six homers, two triples, six doubles, 26 RBIs and 26 runs scored this year. He was the team leader in batting, RBIs, runs scored, triples and homers and tied for the lead in doubles. Pilgrim batted .385 with five doubles, one triple, 24 runs scored and six batted in.
Grantham had a.373 average with three doubles, one triple, 13 RBIs and 25 runs scored. McCarter had a 4-1 record and a 1.62 ERA, with 38 strikeouts in 30.1 innings.
East Webster finished second in Region 2-2A. The Wolverines dropped a three-game series to 1-2A champion New Site in the opening round of the playoffs.
Eupora pitcher/third baseman Reed Hale will also play on the District 4 team. As a sophomore, he batted .377 for the Eagles with two doubles, 25 RBIs and 24 runs scored. On the mound, he was 0-2 with a 2.00 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 42 innings, while holding batters to a .182 average.
Three graduating East Webster seniors – catcher John Wesley Hardin, infielder Sloan Hillhouse and infielder Jon Austin Roberts - played for the North in the Crossroad D.M. Howie all star game for 1A and 2A schools last Saturday at William Carey College. The South won 6-4.
“They all represented the school well,” Smith said. “They played hard and did a good job. Both teams played well. The South just made a few more plays.”
Hardin batted .327 for the season, Hillhouse ,351 and Roberts .386.
Smith served as an assistant at East Webster this year and was promoted to head coach following the resignation of Wes Johnson.
