It wasn’t easy but the East Webster baseball team grabbed a pair of one-run wins over Calhoun City this past week to take control of the Division 2-2A race.
After an 8-5 win over French Camp on Monday, East Webster followed that win up with a 7-6 win over Calhoun City on Tuesday and a 4-3 win on Thursday.
East Webster, now 13-5 on the year, will host Leflore County on Tuesday in a Division 2-2A doubleheader. The Wolverines will host New Hope in a non-division contest on Thursday.

French Camp 5
The Wolverines built a 6-0 lead and held on to take a three-run win over the Panthers on Monday.
East scored one in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth to lead 6-0. French Camp responded with one in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and finished off with two in the seventh. East Webster added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth.
East Webster had 10 hits in the contest, led by Sloan Hillhouse who was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Jon Austin Roberts was 2-for-3 with a double while Dalton Perrigin was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. J.T. Slay had a double and drove in two runs while Wes Silver had a double, two stolen bases and scored twice. Art Thompson added a double and drove in a run.
East Webster sent five pitchers to the mound as Gray McCarter got the start and pitched four innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks while striking out five. Hillhouse, Thompson, Kainan Reed and Will Gaskin combined for the final three innings.

Calhoun City 6
East Webster held off a late rally by Calhoun City to take a one-run win over the Wildcats on Tuesday.
Calhoun led 1-0 after the first before East responded with single runs in the second, third and sixth with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Calhoun scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and three runs in the top of the seventh.
East Webster had nine hits in the contest as Jon Austin Roberts was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Dalton Perrigin and Cameron Pilgrim were each 2-for-3.
Roberts got the start and pitched four innings and gave up one run on four hits and two walks. Walker Johnson pitched the final three innings and gave up five runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out four.

Calhoun City 3
For the second straight contest, East Webster had to hold off a late rally by Calhoun City to take a one-run win over the Wildcats.
East Webster scored one in the third and three in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. Calhoun fought back with one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
East Webster had just five hits in the contest as Wes Silver was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Walker Johnson was 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI. J.T. Slay also had two stolen bases.
Gray McCarter got the start and pitched five innings and gave up three hits and struck out five to pick up the win. Will Gaskin gave up one run and Wes Silver pitched the final two innings to record the save.
