For a playoff game, the East Webster Wolverines made it look easy on Friday night against Potts Camp.
East Webster scored in all three phases of the game and dominated Potts Camp with a 42-0 win over the Cardinals on Friday night.
East Webster, now 10-1 on the season, will have their hands full this week as they hit the road to play at Pelahatchie.
East Webster coach Ron Price was proud of the way his team played to open up the playoffs.
“I’m thankful that we went in and took care of business,” Price said. “We were able to score on special teams, had a defensive touchdown and were very effective on offense. I’m proud of the way we played in all three phases of the game. To win a playoff game is special and to win the way out ream won was even more special. We were able to get a lot of kids in the game and that’s important at this time of year. I was proud of our football team that we were able to play a game like that.”
The Wolverines dominated the game from the outset. After forcing a quick three and out, the Wolverines got on the board as Conner Shurden returned a Potts Camp punt 54 yards for a touchdown. Parker Burleson booted the PAT and East Webster led 7-0 early in the first quarter.
After another three and out by the Potts Camp offense, the Wolverines went 59 yards in six plays at Tyrik Pittman scored on a 10-yard run. Burleson booted the PAT and East Webster led 14-0.
Potts Camp put together its best drive of the game as they moved deep inside East Webster territory before turning the ball over on downs at the EW 14.
The Wolverines responded with a quick score as Pittman raced 86 yards for a touchdown. Burleson’s PAT gave East Webster an early 21-0 lead in the first quarter.
East got the ball right back on a Peyton Flora interception but missed a field goal.
Flora got the ball right back for East Webster and found the end zone this time on a 43-yard interception return with 7:45 left in the second quarter. Burleson’s PAT gave East Webster a 28-0 lead.
“Going into the game, we were concerned on defense because they got in so many different formations,” Price said. “But we got lined up right and that’s the second straight shutout for our defense. If you are going to be playing well, now’s the time that you want to be doing it. I thought Ethan Roberts had another good game. He has been so good at middle linebacker since we started district play. He has stepped up when we needed him to and has been the leader of our defense. Carter had a good game and was at the right place at the right time.”
After another Potts Camp punt, East Webster needed just two plays to go 47 yards as Steven Betts scored on a 26-yard run with 2:40 left in the half. Burleson’s PAT gave East Webster a 35-0 lead at the half.
East got the ball to start the second half but ended up fumbling at the Potts Camp 8. But Flora grabbed his third interception of the game and set up the Wolverines at the Potts Camp 26. Five plays later, Daniel Rogers scored o a 6-yard run as the Wolverines led 42-0 with the Burleson PAT.
East Webster had 356 yards of offense with 318 rushing and 38 passing. Pittman led the Wolverines with 158 yards on nine carries while Debo Patterson had 50 yards on three carries. Gray McCarter had 45 yards on two carries.
On defense, Flora led the defense with three interceptions and three tackles. Ethan Roberts had 10 tackles while Isaac Jones had eight tackles. Kobe Smith had six tackles while Camron Jennings and Sedrick Taylor each had five tackles apiece.
The Wolverines will hit the road this week to take on a tough Pelahatchie team.
“From this point forward, you will be playing a quality opponent,” Price said. “It’s going to be a challenge on the road. They have a Division I running back and are averaging about 40 points a game. We will find out how good we might be on defense and see if we can stop them. They don’t give up a lot of points on defense so we need to find a way to move the ball and score some points.. We also have to be good in the special teams and score some points there and hit all of our PATs. We don’t get any redos at this point.”
