While Winston county is enjoying an exciting weekend on the gridiron down in Hattiesburg, those staying back at home can also get in on some excitement on Saturday.
Winston Academy is hosting the Red Hills Showdown, an all-day basketball event the Patriots are putting on that includes eight games and eight different teams participating. The day will begin with the Winston Academy B-team girls taking on Nanih Waiya at 9 a.m.
Following that game will be the high school girls from WA taking on East Webster at 10 a.m. The WA Patriots boys team plays Nanih Waiya at 11:10 followed by East Webster and Hillcrest Christian boys at 12:20, Noxapater and Starkville Christian boys at 1:30 and those same two teams’ playing immediately after in girls basketball action.
The day will end with Columbus Christian and Canton Academy boys playing at 3:50 p.m. and Grace Christian and Hillcrest Christian boys at 5 p.m.
For WA (6-2) they’re looking to rebound against Nanih Waiya after losing two out of three games over the last couple of weeks. Collin Mills has been the leading scorer all season with 15.3 points per game and they’ve gotten 10.1 points from Blake Peterson as well as five rebounds and two steals.
Nash Vanlandingham averages 7.3 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds a game.
The Lady Patriots (5-2) are on a bit of a hot streak. They lost the first two games of the season but have gone 5-0 since that stretch. They’re looking to continue that against the Lady Warriors this Saturday.
