It was a successful week at Canton Academy and the MAIS 2-AAA track and field championships for Winston Academy and several athletes came home with some ribbons as the Patriots performed well.
The girls finished third overall in the district with the boys finishing fourth and five first place finishes from both teams combined.
The girls collected the most first place wins with four on the week as they won two group first-place finishes and two more individual awards. Natalee Eaves produced big for the Lady Patriots as she finished first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.69. She also finished second in the 200 M dash at 28.13.
Madelyn Bright continued her strong career by winning the high jump and finishing third in the 400 M dash with a time of 1:12.29. The 4X100 and 4X200 M relay team both took home first place as Laura Vowell, Lana Boatner, Bright and Eaves posted a 54.57 in the 100 and 1:52.89 in the 200 for the win.
In field events, Lilly Sisson had a 28-foot throw in the shot put to finish third in the district.
For the boys, it was a big day for Nash Vanlandingham in the field. He finished as district champ with a 41-foot throw in the shot put and earned the top seed in the North State meet this week. Trace Wiggington also placed with a third-place finish.
Vanlandingham also finished second in the discus and teammate Chandler Robertson finished fourth.
Evan Willis was a runner-up finisher in the high jump last week and also finished third in 300 M hurdles and fifth in the 110 M hurdles and the high jump. Curry Black finished fourth in the 100 M dash, Tanner Boatner was fourth in the 200 M, Michael Majors was fourth in 400 M and Luke Dempsey was fourth in the 110 M hurdles.
All together, it was a productive day for both teams at the meet and has the qualifiers ready to compete for the North State championship at Clarksdale on Wednesday.
“Overall we had a good day in the field events,” head boys coach Justin Childs said. “I’m excited to see all of our kids compete next week in Clarksdale.”
