Playoff competition typically involves a higher degree of difficulty the farther along a team advances.
Louisville appears to have not received that memo, as it earned its most resounding victory of the year last Friday in the form of a 59-0 win over Clarksdale in the second round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs.
The win advances Louisville (12-1) to the third round of the postseason, where it will face Pontotoc (11-2) on Friday.
Louisville has now outscored its opponents 100-0 through the first two rounds, and the Louisville defense has held teams scoreless for three consecutive weeks.
“They’re playing good ball right now, defensive-wise,” Louisville coach M.C. Miller said. “Everything is coming together. We’re not as banged up as we were. We’re getting back our physical strength, and all of them are playing really well now. We just have to keep them going.”
The Louisville defense recovered three Clarksdale (7-5) fumbles as Kedarius Dixon, Kristian Hopkins and Ashanti Cistrunk recorded one apiece. Dixon’s recovered fumble was returned for a first-quarter touchdown. Jy’Kevious Hibbler added two more sacks to his season’s total, and Hopkins’ nine tackles were team-leading.
While Louisville’s defense proved insurmountable, the offense added the perfect complement. The unit rolled up 503 total yards of offense behind 271 yards rushing and 232 yards passing.
Louisville quarterback Deonte Yarbrough rushed for 71 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for a season-high 232 yards passing and one touchdown on 12 completions.
“He’s playing really well,” said Miller. “He’s looking better and better, and he’s getting his confidence back and everything. He’s looking pretty good.”
Yarbrough opened the game’s scoring with a 2-yard run on Louisville’s opening possession to cap a 98-yard drive, and Dixon added his touchdown via a fumble recovery with 23 seconds left in the first quarter. Kicker Elijah Wilkes converted both extra-point attempts to give Louisville a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Louisville offense was amplified in the second period.
Yarbrough scored on an 18-yard run with 7:35 remaining in the second quarter, and Wilkes followed with the PAT. Louisville’s defense forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set up a 6-yard touchdown run by Kevon Jackson with 6:27 left in the period. Wilkes’ PAT upped the lead to 28-0.
Yarbrough added a 1-yard touchdown scamper, and Jackson followed with a 38-yard touchdown run to give Louisville a 42-0 advantage after two successful PATs by Wilkes.
Jackson ended the night with 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
Wilkes booted a 42-yard field goal late in the second quarter to send Louisville into halftime with a 45-0 lead.
Louisville’s air attack produced a third-quarter score when Yarbrough hit Alvius Haynes for a 15-yard touchdown with 4:07 left in the third quarter to give Louisville a 52-0 lead after Wilkes’ PAT.
Haynes tallied a game-high 121 yards receiving on four receptions.
Camden Sanders capped the night’s scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run with 2:59 left in the fourth quarter, and Wilkes’ PAT made the score 59-0.
“It just felt like everything went our way on offense and defense,” Miller said.
Louisville makes its first road trip of the postseason this week when it travels to Pontotoc for its third-round contest. The Warriors are coming off of a 31-6 win against Senatobia and have outscored their opponents 72-12 in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
“Pontotoc has a good team,” Miller said. “They have a good running back, and they play good fundamental, sound football. We have to go up there, be balanced, and play them like we’re supposed to play. We can’t go up there and make a whole lot of mistakes and stuff like that. We just have to go up there, settle down, and just play hard-nosed football.”
