Winston Academy knocked off the Lady Wildcats of Louisville High School in prep volleyball action last week. The Lady Patriots took both the junior varsity and varsity matches from the Wildcats and advanced to 2-4 on the season having also beaten Noxapater this season, both on the road.
It was a convincing 3-1 victory in the record books but much closer than the final points. WA won a back-and-forth opening set 25-22 and a second set at 25-19. The Lady Wildcats stayed alive in set number three with a 25-23 win over the Lady Pats but the visitors would prevail in a tight fourth set to clinch the match with a 25-22 win.
Head coach Candice Cefalu is thrilled with the progress of her team in the inaugural season as they’ve gotten two big wins inside the county against public schools. Additionally, the young junior varsity team has gone 4-2 this year which shows the future is bright within the program.
“One of the things I noticed against Louisville is our girls played very relaxed. I had girls really hustling for the ball and they converted really bad passes into great points by hustling,” Cefalu said. “I’ve taught them never to give up and play until the whistle and I believe that made the difference in this game.”
For Louisville, they fell to 4-9 on the season. They’ll play Kosciusko on the road on Tuesday and are at home against Yazoo City on Thursday. WA plays at Heritage Academy on Tuesday and will be at home against Grace Christian on Monday.
