It was a busy week for Winston Academy on the court as the teams played three games and both found a win sandwiched between a couple of district losses.
The Lady Patriots came off of a big win last week in district play and couldn’t duplicate their result against Starkville and East Rankin Academy. Much like the first time they met, the Lady Patriots couldn’t get hardly any offense going against the Lady Volunteers as they were beaten 38-13.
WA kept it close in the first half trailing just 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and 17-8 at the half. But they managed just five points the rest of the game as they hit just five field goals in four quarters.
Hailey Bradford and Betsy Karson Hatcher each had four points.
The Lady Pats got back into the winning side of things against Kemper Academy with a 45-25 win. They gave up two points in three of the four quarters and had nine players score in the game.
Bradford scored a game-high 14 points and Lana Boatner had 12 points.
In the final game of the week, WA was hoping to get its second district win of the season but it wasn’t to be as they continued their scoring troubles against good teams. ERA won 39-15 with Bradford scoring eight of those points. Consistency in scoring remained the major culprit as the Lady Patriots fell to 10-12 on the year and are now 1-8 in district play with one week to play in the regular season.
This week closes things out before district tournament play as WA will travel to Leake Academy on Tuesday and will host Kirk Academy Friday on Senior Night.
BOYS
Things played out similarly for the boys last week as they started the week with a 74-37 loss to Starkville Academy, beat Kemper Academy and then were defeated by ERA.
Against the Vols, it was the first quarter that set the tone. SA took a 27-10 lead in the first quarter led by Jawon Yarbrough who poured in 18 points. They never looked back from there.
Johnson Wells led WA with 14 points.
In a 61-47 victory against Kemper, WA had three players in double figures. Brylee Wall and Cage Palmer each scored 17 points and Wells had 12 in the win. The team had seven 3-pointers.
To close out the week, WA gave ERA a run for its money in a 47-37 loss. The two teams were tied at 21 at the half but ERA would be the one that would distance itself in the game. They took a lead at 34-28 at the end of the third and extended in the fourth to win the game. Wells’ 10 points led the way.
WA is 3-16 on the season and have an 0-9 district record ahead of the final conference game against Leake.
