Three players from Choctaw County’s Region 4-3A championship team have received all state recognition and 21 players have received region honors.
Senior Brady Brooks is the 3A all-state center and sophomore Trace Beard the punter. Senior Calvin Talley was chosen second team defensive tackle.
Beard had a 43.4 punting average. He also handled the placekicking duties, converting 51 of 58 PATs and three of four field goals.
Chargers receiving region honors are led by sophomore running back Dicenzo Miller who was named offensive MVP. Miller carried 221 times for 1,483 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Eight Chargers were named to the region Super 24, including junior quarterback Tylan Carter who totaled 2,082 yards and 24 touchdowns running and passing despite being limited for several games with an ankle injury.
Carter was joined on the Super 24 by wide receiver Kendall Coleman, offensive linemen Brooks and Josh Hall, defensive linemen Talley and Tabias Merritt, linebacker Bryan Threadgill and defensive back Ques McNeal.
Named to the first team are Beard, offensive lineman Logan Stirewalt, running back Antonio Kennedy, defensive linemen Tyler Homan and Devaughn Miller, linebacker Israel Whitmore and defensive back Chris White. Second team selections are offensive linemen Chris Anderson and Kanden Utley, wide receiver Preston Payne and defensive backs Tyson Coleman and Dajuan Woods.
After starting 1-3, Choctaw County won 10 straight before losing to Noxubee County in the 3A North State final to finish 11-4 in Jeff Roberts first year as head coach. The Chargers won the region with a 4-0 record and defeated Ruleville Central, defending state champion Water Valley and Region 3-3A champion Amanda Elzy in the playoffs.
