The Eupora Eagles got the 2019 football season started last week with fall practices.
The Eagles were able to practice Monday through Thursday but got rained out from practice on Friday. Saturday’s Meet the Eagles was also rained out.
“I thought the first week went really well,” Eupora coach Stephen Edwards said. “We have a lot of new faces in some positions. It was really hot last week and that always makes it tough. It’s as hot as it has been in my 24 years of coaching. I thought our attitude has been real good for the first week, especially considering how hot it was.”
The Eagles will travel to South Pontotoc on Friday for a half of football with the Class 4A Cougars at 7 p.m.
“We haven’t gone a full day in pads yet,” Edwards said. “We still have to do some competition and still have some spots that are wide open. At this point, it’s going to be whoever makes the play. It doesn’t matter who you are, you are going to have to earn what you get. There are no gimmes.”
Edwards said the Eagles still have some holes to fill.
“On defense, we have some holes to fill and trying to find the right players there,” Edwards said. “Offensively, we are trying to see what we can do. We are going to run the ball first. We do have receivers but we are going to run the football first. We have some guys who can catch and going to have to get them the ball in space. We are going to have to do both but we have to establish some sort of running game and find our identity on both sides of the ball.”
The Eagles will open the regular season at Winona, a former division opponent, who is two years removed from playing for the Class 2A state championship.
