When Choctaw County and Winona meet Friday in Ackerman, all eyes will be on the opposing quarterbacks, senior An'darius Coffey for the Tigers and junior Tylan Carter for the Chargers. They are the engines that drive their offenses.
“Both are really, really good runners,” said Winona coach Joey Tompkins. “They're both really good athletes. They both started last year. Experience is not overrated. They know what it's like to take a snap.”
The two second-year starters opened the season with impressive performances. Coffey was five of nine passing for 139 yards and one touchdown and ran 14 times for 74 yards and two TDs in a 28-6 victory over Eupora. Carter carried 20 times for 189 yards and two TDs and completed four of eight passes for 76 yards in a 34-20 win over Independence.
Coffey has committed to Ole Miss as a defensive back, the position he played for the Tigers as a sophomore before taking over at quarterback last year. “The kid's special,” said Choctaw County coach Jeff Roberts. “He's going to an SEC school as a defensive back. That tells you what type of athlete he is.”
