The games that matter are up next for the 4-2 LHS Wildcats as they open Region 4-4A play on Friday night. First up on the docket is Northeast Lauderdale (2-4) who will host the Wildcats this week. Shorter has watched the film and sees a dangerous offense to defend. He’s challenged his players to finish this final half of the schedule strong and position themselves up well for the playoffs.
“I like where we are right now,” Shorter said of his team. “We’re healthy going into this division stretch. We’ve been battle tested and know what kids can do what. Northeast Lauderdale runs the Wing-T and it’s difficult to defend, so we have to be disciplined on defense because they can hurt us.”

WA SET TO HOST SIMPSON
Next up for Winston Academy is another big test for the Patriots as they welcome in longtime MAIS contender Simpson Academy on Friday. The Cougars are 3-3, but the three losses have come to Jackson Prep, Hartfield and Lamar, who all are in the hunt for state championships this season.
While it’s not a district game, it’s another game for coach Pat Byrd’s team to test its will against high-level competition and get better. He’s hoping that everything falls into place for them to get a big win.
“They’re big up front. They’re not flashy or fancy so you know what they’re going to do with the down-hill run,” Byrd said of the Cougars. “They’re going to come off the football and hit you in the mouth so we need to be prepared to hit back. I’m excited to see how we rise to the challenge.”
