Well, August is here, and that means football fans are gearing up for the season. Our favorite team has yet to taste defeat, and we’re hopeful that the loss column stays blank as we hope for the state championship. We love high school football in our state. It is a focal point of a lot of people’s lives from August through December. Our football schedules are posted on our refrigerators, and our calendars have all the high school, college and pro games of our favorite teams highlighted.
Remember, these high school athletes give their all for us. They pride themselves on representing their communities with honor and dignity. They have worked hard over the summer and in recent days in heat that is unbearable to the rest of us, so when they mess up, remember for whom they are playing. They play for their teammates, for their schools and for their communities.
PRO BASEBALL NEWS
The Biloxi Shuckers’ 10-game winning streak was halted by the Mobile Bay Bears Saturday night, 4-2. The Shuckers have won both halves of the South League season and will host games 1 and 2 of the Southern Division Championship Series on September 4-5 at MGM Park in Biloxi.
The other pro baseball team in our state, the Mississippi Braves, are only three wins shy of winning their 1,000th game. They play the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Minnesota Twins) for six games this Sunday through Thursday. They are in fourth place in the Southern League South standings at 25-29 as they enter this week’s play.
MSU QB TO BE NAMED
Some football coaches are very tight lipped about naming a starting quarterback before their opening game, but not Joe Moorhead who will probably name one this week. Penn State transfer Tommy Stevens and Keytaon Thompson are the front runners.
COLLEGE HOOPS
Southern Mississippi basketball coach Jay Ladner is talking to Ole Miss about playing a game in November at the Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. The teams last played in 2008. In the future, according to a story in the Biloxi Sun-Herald, Ladner would like to play a game yearly on the Coast.
