Earlier this season, Louisville coach Kenyon Ross grappled with playing with a depleted roster due to the absence of the many football players who played deep into the Wildcats' state championship season.
Ross stressed that things would be more manageable once those players returned to the hardwood. Ross’ patience has been rewarded.
Louisville (4-5) won its third consecutive game of the season and its fourth overall with its 69-50 home win against Choctaw County on Tuesday.
“We started out fast, and we jumped out to a 28-4 lead, and then the rest of the game we kind of got physical and kind of got out of control, but we continued to fight and fight and coasted on in for a win.”
Tequavious Braggs and Tyrell Thames scored 13 points apiece. Clayton Maury pitched in with eight points, and Deonte Yarbrough and Vasedrick Culbertson each ended with six points.
While the Wildcats are the owners of a three-game win streak, Ross said he believes the squad hasn’t yet played up to its full potential, and he hopes his players jell in time for region play.
“I’d like to see what we’re going to do when we get into district play.”
Louisville will play in the East Webster Tournament on Dec. 27-29.
GIRLS
Twelve Louisville players logged points in the Lady Wildcats’ 63-32 win over Choctaw County on Tuesday.
Dyshunte Bragg led the way with 12 points. Kameron Rogers added nine points and Jalen Ingram tallied seven points.
Louisville (9-1) led 20-6 at the end of the first quarter and 43-14 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats added 16 points and four points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
“We started off very slow,” Ross said. “Having these long layoffs is not good for my girls. We’re the type of team that needs to be playing a lot. Once we get into deeper play where we’re playing two or three games a week, I think we’ll really see a different ball club. ”
The Lady Wildcats travel to Mississippi State University on Dec. 26 and 27 for the Travis Outlaw Tournament. Louisville plays Olive Branch on the 26th and Noxubee County on the 27th.
