Nanih Waiya senior Shia Moore has been named to the MHSAA 1A all-state first team on both offense and defense as a running back and a linebacker. He was joined on all state by five teammates.
The honors recognize Nanih Waiya's excellence in repeating as state champion.
Moore carried 91 times for 703 yards and eight touchdowns. On defense, he had 58 tackles.
In a 28-13 victory over Lumberton in the championship game, Moore had 17 carries for 125 yards. He prefers playing defense and hopes that is where he will be at the collegiate level.
Also on first team are senior fullback Devean Turner, junior return specialist Austin Sanders, junior offensive tackle Cody Warren and senior outside linebacker Tylan Glass. John Tabor Stokes, a junior, made second team at tight end.
Sanders and Turner were part of Nanih Waiya's potent running game. Sanders ran for 1,236 yards and 18 touchdowns and and Turner for 731 yards and 10 TDs. Stokes had 16 receptions for 282 yards and six TDs. Glass was credited with 101 tackles, including 10 for losses and two sacks. He was also a wide receiver with a team leading 32 receptions for 586 yards and seven TDs. Warren is a two-way lineman who opened holes for the runners and made 55 tackles.
Nanih Waiya had eight players on the Region 2-1A all star first team and four on the second team.
Glass, Sanders, Turner, Moore and Warren were joined on the first team by senior quarterback Donovan Turner, junior outside linebacker Taylor Higginbotham and senior offensive tackle Kris Eaves.
Named to the second team are Stokes, senior punter Trevor Holdiness, junior offensive guard Prentiss Eaves and senior defensive end Tristan Conner.
Donovan Turner was MVP in the championship game. He ran 24 times for 189 yards and completed three passes for 68 yards and a TD. For the season, he totaled 2,491 yards and 29 TDs running and passing.
Higginbotham led the Warriors in tackles on the season with 120.
