Nanih Waiya is sending another player to the college ranks. Gabe Sciple recently signed to play baseball at East Mississippi Community College.
Sciple was 3-1 on the season for the Warriors with a 2.92 ERA in 12 appearances last season. Sciple pitched 24 innings and had 24 strikeouts. Opponents had a .172 on base percentage.
“Gabe was strictly a pitcher for us,” Nanih Waiya coach Tyler Rogers said. “He was a big strike thrower for us. He was a middle reliever and the first guy that we would bring in. He pitched in a lot of big situations for us last year.”
Sciple transferred to Nanih Waiya after playing his sophomore year at Kemper Academy. Rogers thinks Sciple should show improvement this season.
“He had never been in the weight room before he got here,” Rogers said. “We’ve got him in the weight room and he should be a lot stronger this year. He doesn’t throw the ball hard but has a good fastball. He’s probably in the low 80s but again, he’s a strike thrower. I believe his velocity will come up this year.”
Rogers said he sees an expanded role for Sciple this season.
“I would love to keep him in the same role that we had him in last year,” Rogers said. “But it looks like we will probably need him to throw a lot more innings for us this year. We will probably have to move him into a starter’s role.”
Rogers said Sciple was an honor student and has already made a 30 on his ACT.
