WINONA – When high school division tack meets are held, it's all about finishing in the top four. That is the requirement for advancing to a region meet.
At the Division 6-1A meet hosted by Winona High School, Nanih Waiya qualified six boys, three girls and two relay teams and Noxapater five boys, one girl and three relay teams.
They will return to Winona Friday for the Region 3-1A meet. Top four at the region meet will qualify for South State and top four there for the state meet.
The standout performers for Nanih Waiya were a couple of distance runners. Sophomore Trey McMullan was first in three boys race and senior T.J. Redhouse had two firsts and a second in girls competition. McMullan won the 800 in 2:38, 1600 (5:42.86) and 3200 (13:48). Redhouse won the 800 (3:10) and 1600 (7:04.53) and was runnerup in the 3200 (17:20).
Senior Jaynus Williams also had a first for Nanih Waiya boys with a long jump of 17 feet, six inches.
Other Nanih Waiya boys to qualify were sophomore Jon Tabor Stokes, second 400 in 1:01,33 and second in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, half an inch; sophomore Ethan Dailey, third in the 100 (12.35) and third in the 300 hurdles (54.92); freshman Carter Grimes, fourth in the 1600 (6:42.77); and freshman Lee Poole, fourth in the long jump at 16 feet half an inch.
The boys 3200 relay team finished second in 11:14.22.
Also advancing for the Nanih Waiya girls are eighth grader Jaliyah Russey with a third in the 200 (29,80) and fourth in the 100 (14.19), seventh grader Alissya Smith, fourth in the long jump with a leap of 12-11, and the 800 relay team with a fourth place finish in 2:01.74.
Noxapater boys dominated the weight events. Junior Ryan Whitfield won the discus (103-9) and was second in the shot put (37-2¼). Junior Kyler Carter won the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, one inch and sophomore D’Antray Anderson finished third in the discus (76-7).
Other boys to qualify are sophomore Bryan Glass, second in the 200 (24.92), and freshman Conner Thrash, second in the 800 (2:45). Noxapater boys were second in the 400 (50.11) and 800 (1:44.96) relays.
The lone girls to qualify in an individual event was eighth grader Laney Boatner with a third place finish in the 400 (1:11.72). The 400 relay team finished fourth in 1:00.24.
