While the Nanih Waiya football was busy winning a state championship, the school’s basketball teams continued to struggle on the hardwoods.
Both teams were swept in contests against MAIS schools as they lost to Winona Christian, Columbus Christian and Winston Academy.
Nanih Waiya will return to action next week as they travel to French Camp on Tuesday. They will be in the Ethel Tournament on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, Nanih Waiya will play at 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. against Sebastopol. On Friday, the winners play at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. while the losers play at 4 p.m and 5:30 p.m.

The Stars broke open a close game in the second half to take a win over the Warriors.
Winona led 16-10 at the end of the first period and held an 18-17 lead at the end of the first half. The Stars pulled away in the third period as they outscored the Warriors 16-4 to take a 34-21 at the end of the third.
Tyquan McCully led the Warriors with nine points while Rodney Welch had seven points and Jaynus Williams added six points. McMullan had seven rebounds with four assists and four steals. Williams had seven points while Ethan Dailey had six rebounds.

The Lady Stars jumped out to a big lead in the first half and cruised to the win.
The Lady Stars led 16-5 at the end of the first period and then 24-3 in the second period to take a 40-8 lead at the half.
Dallyn Nance led Nanih Waiya with nine points.

After falling behind early, the Warriors rallied in the second half to force overtime but lost to the Rams in the extra period.
Columbus led 19-11 at the end of the first and 36-22 at the half. The Warriors outscored the Rams 21-13 in the third and 16-10 in the fourth to force overtime.
Tyquan McCully led the Warriors with 19 points while Ethan Dailey had 15 points and Jordan Higginbotham added 11 points. McCully had six rebounds and four assists while Dailey, Higginbotham and Izaiaha Nicholson each had six rebounds apiece.

Columbus outscored Nanih Waiya in every period to take a 25-point win over the Lady Warriors.
Columbus led 12-4 at the end of the first and 24-12 at the half. The Lady Rams continued to extend the lead as they outscored the Lady Warriors 15-9 in the third and 14-7 in the fourth.
Jalia Cotten led the Lady Warriors with seven points while Hanna Higginbotham had six points.
Winston Academy boys 55,

Winston Academy broke open the Saturday matchup at the Red Hills Showdown with a big second period to take the win.
Nanih Waiya led 5-4 at the end of the first before Winston used a 30-12 advantage in the second to lead 34-17 at the half.
Jordan Higginbotham led the Warriors with eight points, four rebounds and three blocks. Rodney Welch, Will Rogers and Izaiaha Nicholson each had five points apiece while Ethan Dailey and Jaynus Williams each had four points apiece.
Tyquan McCully and Dailey each had five points apiece while Welch had four rebounds.

In a low-scoring contest, the Lady Patriots held on to take a three-point win over the Lady Warriors in the Red Hills Showdown on Saturday.
Winston led 8-5 at the end of the first and 13-8 at the half. The Lady Warriors extended that lead to 22-15 at the end of the third. The Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Patriots 9-5 in the fourth for the final margin.
I’onnya Coleman, Dallyn Nance and Taina Thompson each had four points apiece for the Lady Warriors while Bria Tubby and Jalia Cotten each had three points apiece.
