A clean sleep against rival Noxubee County primed two Louisville basketball teams for district play as they stayed hot last week.
The girls squad rolled over the Lady Tigers in a 70-43 blowout but the final score didn’t indicate how close the game was for the first two quarters. LHS led 20-8 in the first quarter but the Lady Tigers got the game down to 25-21 at one point in the second quarter before going to the halftime down 32-24.
The third quarter was where the Lady Wildcats began to pull away as they out-scored Noxubee 23-8 in the frame and 38-19 in the second half.
Areyanna Hunter had a huge game for the Lady Wildcats (10-3) as she poured in 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting with seven assists and six steals. Kameron Rogers had 18 points with an efficient 8-of-11 shooting night, five rebounds and four assists.
The boys game was much more competitive as it was earlier this year when the Wildcats took home an eight-point lead. This time they won 60-51 to take the season series in a sweep just like the girls did.
Vasedrick Culberson continues to pace the team in scoring and led the way with 20 points while Tyvoris Cooper finished with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Drea Shumaker had 12 points.
Neither coaches returned phone calls again this week to comment on their respective games.
It’s now time for district action in Class 4A, Region 4. Last year the Wildcat boys were the No. 3 seed in the district but they have bigger sights ahead this season. The boys (7-3) will be taking on Northeast Lauderdale on the road on Tuesday night to tip things off. The Trojans are 4-10 on the year and are losers of six of the last seven games.
The girls are the defending champions in the district and in the entire classification and their aspirations are set on the state championship. In their way will be a new addition to the district in powerhouse Choctaw Central who has moved up from Class 3A to 4A this season. The Lady Wildcats will also play Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday who has a 10-5 record and has already won a district game beating West Lauderdale last week.
After their games with Northeast, the two teams will be back in action at home against Kosciusko on Friday night.
