Soccer has seen a lot of transition over the course of this year at Louisville High School.
The boys team got a new coach early in the season when former player and Alcorn State kicker Corey McCullough was hired to coach the team. He was driving back and forth from Alcorn to Louisville while ASU prepared for the Celebration Bowl and then he took over full time right before Christmas.
The team was back in action for the first time since Christmas break with three matches last week as they traded home and home games with Newton County on Monday and Tuesday and played West Lauderdale on Friday night. They lost all three matches 7-0, 8-1 and 7-0 respectively, but McCullough is looking at things more than the final score or wins and losses right now.
“Newton County is one of the best teams in the district so I was hoping that we would just come out and do things the right way,” McCullough said. “Those scores against those three teams didn’t indicate how much better we have gotten. We settled down and passed the ball really well and I was proud of that.”
Tuesday night was senior night for the Wildcats as they honored 10 players. Six of them were on the boys squad and four of them were with the girls. For the boys, Jamarvis Hudson, Deontae Lewis, Roper Stoots, Marc Sudduth, Kristian Stanley and D’Angeolo Triplett all were honored for their time with the Wildcats boys team.
The girls lost all three of their matches during the week as well but had a special evening at R.E. Hinze Field as well. Shkindra Hunt, Sha’myia Goss, Tyianna Foster and Ericka Miller are the seniors.
Next up for the Wildcats boys and girls is the final three games of the year. They host Mississippi School for Mathematics on Monday, travel to Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and return home to take on Philadelphia Friday night. The girls are currently 0-9 and the boys are 1-7 but McCullough sees improvement every day from his team.
“This week was good teaching wise. We’re trying to get in there and get settled,” McCullough said. “It’s been good to get out there and being there consistently. We see a lot of things that need to work on in the offseason but I see a lot of potential in my guys.”
