After a week off from the court, the Louisville Wildcat basketball teams are heating things back up this week.
The girls team started the season with a win against New Hope at the Choctaw Central Classic and against Tupelo at the Bank of Pontotoc Classic. It was a couple of games that taught head coach Fred Morris about his first Lady Wildcat team and also showed him how far the team must go as they split decisions beating New Hope 72-58 and falling to Class 6A Tupelo 55-40.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Morris said of his team. “We can be our own worst enemy in terms of showing up and executing. We’ll only be as good as we defend. When you play up, you can’t out-athlete those teams. You’ve got to defend so we have to get better.”
The Lady Wildcats had a week off from games last week to do just that and Morris was proud of his team’s progress. Now they get a chance to get back on the floor on Thursday as they host Kemper County in the first home game of the season.
The other group of Wildcats from Kemper lost their first two games of the season when they played Northeast Lauderdale twice, but they came back on Saturday and knocked off West Point 61-39. Morris sees some challenges but also ways that his team can attack.
“They’re young and athletic,” Morris said of Kemper County. “I saw them play West Point and they pressured the ball full court and ran motion. If we’re patient and defend, we’ll do well.”
As far as the boys team is concerned, they’re scheduled to make their season debut on Thursday against Kemper County. The Kemper County boys are also 1-2 on the young season with losses to Northeast Lauderdale and a win over West Point.
