The East Webster Lady Wolverines only got in one game last week and needed every run.
The Lady Wolverines had to score three runs to post an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Winona on Tuesday in a key Division 2-2A contest.
East Webster, now 7-4 and 3-0 in 2-2A play, will return to action this week with a pair of Division 2-2A contests as the Lady Wolverines were to host Bruce on Tuesday a6 6 p.m. and travel to Calhoun City on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Wolverines scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a come-from-behind win over Division 2-2A foe Winona on Tuesday.
In a back-and-forth contest, East Webster took the early lead with two runs in the second inning before Winona answered with two in the top of the third. East scored one in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. After a scoreless fourth inning, Winona scored three in the fifth to go ahead 5-3. East Webster tied the score in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to make the score 5-5. Winona went back ahead with two runs in the top of the sixth to lead 7-5. East Webster then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held in the top of the seventh to take the win.
East Webster had 10 stolen bases in the game as Kelly McKnight stole three bases and Jessica Davis had two stolen bases.
East Webster had 10 hits in the contest as Sydney Dewberry was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Whitney Winter was 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI. Emma McKee, Peyton Flora and Jessica Davis each had one hit apiece and drove in one run while Curtlyn Blake and Coy Jennings each had singles and Liz Massey pitched all seven innings and gave up seven runs on 11 hits and four walks while striking out eight.
EW's Springfield takes NJCAA National pitcher honors
FULTON — The honors keep rolling in for sophomore pitcher Bailie Springfield.
After earning her third Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Pitcher of the Week honor on Tuesday, Springfield was selected as National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.
Springfield, a former East Webster standout, went 3-0 and threw 18 shutout innings on the week. She had 16 strikeouts and only gave up seven hits and two walks to help the No. 10 Indians improve to 22-6 and 13-1 inside conference play last week.
The East Webster alumna improved to 13-2 on the year in the Indians' 15-2 Game 1 win at Holmes on Monday. She has tossed six shutouts and ranks in the nation's Top 5 in wins. Her 1.21 ERA ranks 14th in the country while having the most innings pitched (87.0) amongst the leaders. Springfield's 69 strikeouts on the season is 12th in the country.
Springfield is the first athlete to earn multiple NJCAA Pitcher of the Week honors in a season. She was also named Fast Pitch News JUCO Pitcher of the Week during the first week of the season.
The Lady Indians are 24-6 overall and 15-1 in MACJC play.
