Nanih Waiya kicked off the 2019 fast-pitch softball season on Monday night against one of Class 2A’s best teams.
And it showed in the final score as Eupora took a 10-0 win over the Lady Warriors in each team’s first game.
The game was tight for the first four innings as Eupora scored one in the first and two in the third to lead 4-0 going into the fifth. The Lady Eagles started to pull away as they scored three in the fifth, on win the sixth and three in the seventh for the final margin.
Nanih Waiya only had one hit in the game on a single by Jalia Cotton. Kaylee Gregory, Cotton, Dallyn Nance and Hanna Higginbotham also drew walks in the game. Nance also had two stolen bases in the game but was caught stealing once.
Gregory got the start on the mound and pitched three solid innings, using 54 pitches. She gave up three runs, but only one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
Nanih Waiya will return to action on Thursday as they travel to Choctaw County. Then on Monday, March 4, the Lady Warriors will travel to rival Noxapater for a 6:30 p.m. contest. On Thursday, March 7, the Lady Warriors will play at French Camp in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
BASEBALL
The two-time defending Class 1A champions were set to get their season under way this week with three games scheduled.
The Warriors were set to open the season on Tuesday at Winona in a 7 p.m. contest. On Friday, Nanih Waiya will have its hope opener against Choctaw Central. On Saturday, the Warriors will travel to East Webster to play Choctaw County at 1 p.m. and host East Webster at 3 p.m.
