The Lady Patriots are on a roll on the diamond. Since dropping the second game of the season against Newton County Academy, WA has reeled off five-straight wins including getting its first District 2-AAA win of the year.
WA had its first district ball game in Columbus last Tuesday against Heritage Academy and won the game 5-2. Mayson Smith led the way with a hit and two RBIs. They then traveled to Pillow Academy on Thursday and took home a 2-0 victory. Anna Grace Whitehead was the story of that contest as the Lady Patriots were held down at the plate and had just two hits.
Whitehead gave up just three hits and struck out seven in a complete-game shutout to get the win.
There were three unofficial games in a tournament last weekend at Traceway Park in Clinton as WA played Simpson Academy, Glenbrook Academy and Hartfield Academy in three games shortened by time limit. While WA was being outscored through three innings in those games, they didn’t go down in the record book as official.
The Lady Pats continue to be paced by the young players at the plate as Whitehead is hitting .652 with 15 hits and six doubles. Smith is hitting at a .542 pace with 13 hits and a team-leading 10 RBI as well as knocking four doubles. A third eighth grader, Nat Eaves has a .429 average.
Whitehead is a perfect 6-0 in the circle as well as the eighth grader has thrown 47.2 innings, struck out 56 batters, walked 16 and kept a 3.23 earned run average on the young season.
WA (6-1) was scheduled to play its second district game of the season against Starkville Academy at home on Monday but it was rained out and rescheduled for Tuesday. They’ll play at East Rankin on Thursday on the road and Friday will play in a tournament at Bayou Academy this weekend.
