After the first game against Heritage Academy was too close for comfort, the Winston Academy softball team left no doubt this time around.
In the only game of the week due to rain, WA hosted the other Lady Patriots from Columbus and dismantled the visitors in a 9-0 win. The victory moved WA to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in district play with big games on the way.
Pitcher Anna Grace Whitehead had another stellar start as she threw 7.0 scoreless frames allowing just one hit and striking out 11. She scattered five walks but none of them damaged the scoreboard.
The eighth grader was pitching with a lead after the first inning as WA put a two-spot on the board in the first. They didn’t get things going again until the fourth inning, however, when they put two runs up. Leading 5-0 heading into the sixth, the Lady Patriots would put the game away for good as they scored four runs and won it 9-0.
Eighth grader Nat Eaves led the team with a 2-for-4 night and three RBI as she blasted a home run in the game. Freshman Madi Lee went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double and Whitehead had two hits as well and an RBI double. Mayson Smith drove in two runs on a hit.
After having a short week this past week with just one game, the Lady Pats are making up for lost time in a big way this upcoming week. WA played Oak Hill Academy on Tuesday night at East Mississippi Community College and they follow that up with a game against Leake Academy at home today (Wednesday) at 5 p.m.
Canton Academy comes to town on Saturday for a varsity double header beginning at 10 a.m. and the team will travel to Starkville Academy on Monday to play a conference game against the Lady Vols beginning at 4 p.m.
