The French Camp slow pitch softball team split two games in a tournament at Eupora Saturday, defeating New Hope 4-2 and losing to the host team 6-4. Earlier in the week the Lady Panthers were defeated by Columbus 9-0.
Against New Hope, French Camp scored one run in the first on a double by Jillian Skidmore and three in the fifth, the big hit being a two-run single by Breanna Grice. French Camp had eight hits, including two singles each for Breanna Grice and Caden Tiller and doubles by Skidmore and Maci Grice.
Maci Grice did the pitching, allowing six hits and one walk.
Coach Todd Chesser said a key to the victory was the defense. The Lady Panthers committed two errors, but neither resulted in any runs.
New Hope is a 5A school that is a traditional power in slow pitch with numerous state championships.
French Camp had 12 hits against Eupora, but struggled in situations with runners in scoring position. “That has been sort of theme for us,” Chesser said.
Breanna Grice had a single and double, Emma Wright and Cassie Taylor two singles each.
French Camp was held to three hits in the Columbus game. Skidmore, Abby Leathers and Kalee McDaniel each singled.
French Camp has a rematch with Columbus, a 5A school, at home Thursday and will return to Eupora Saturday for another tournament.
