The Choctaw County softball team lost games to defending 4A state champion Kosciusko 17-0 and Louisville 15-11 last week.
Coach Lauren Fancher said the Lady Chargers hit well against Louisville. “We just had a few more errors in the field as compared with the other team. Molly Thomas fought hard from the mound and (catcher) Caden Miles is improving with every behind the plate.”
Miles had a triple, Thomas, Sierra Jones and Haley Miller each doubled.
Choctaw County has a doubleheader at Kosciusko Thursday.
Chargers walk way past Louisville, 11-5
The Choctaw County baseball team opened the season with an 11-5 win over Louisville and a 16-8 loss to Winona,
The story of the Louisville game was walks – the Chargers received 18.
“They (Louisville) struggled to throw strikes. They still had a bunch of their guys playing basketball.” said Choctaw County coach Andy Young.
Justin Jenkins had a first inning homer, walked three times, and scored twice. Landon Wells drew five walks and scored two runs.
Dawson Jones picked up the win. He worked the first three innings, allowed one hit and no earned runs with five strikeouts. “He did really well,” Young said.
Choctaw County jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Winona. Then the roof caved in when Winona scored eight runs in the third and five more in the fourth.
Jenkins blanked the Tigers the first two innings before running into trouble in the third. “I left him in too long. I fully take the blame,” Young said. “I thought he was going to get out of it. He was pitching really well. We made two errors behind him, then they hit a grand slam. It was like a snow ball down hill after we made those errors.”
Garrett Ables had the grand slam for Winona. Logan Murphy had a single, double and two RBIs for the Chargers.
“We have a really young team. You're going to make errors when you're young,” Young said. “I was proud of my kids. They battled back. Winona has a senior laden team. You could see when it got late in the game that their experience paid off.”
Due to injuries, Choctaw County started three freshmen against Winona – Dicenzo Miller, Micah Gammil and Clark Crowley. “They played really well,” Young said. “We are going to take our licks, but we are going to be fine.”
Choctaw County has a Region 5-3A home game Friday against Houston.
