The Choctaw County volleyball team ran its win streak to five matches with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Grace Christian. The Lady Chargers won 15 of 16 sets during the streak.
Choctaw County participated in the Corinth Crossroads Tournament last Saturday with a 25-13, 25-4 victory over Pine Grove and losses to Mantachie 25-16, 22-25, 15-5 and Walnut 25-21, 25-17.
Veronica Molina led the Lady Chargers against Grace Christian with six kills, four aces, 18 service receptions and one block assist. Addie Stacy had five aces, four kills, five digs and a block assist. Leah Hammons and Caden Miles both served 100 percent and Mary Claire Cagle 90 percent. Hammons had five digs and one solo block, Miles 14 assists and a block assist.
Jenna Bellew filled in for the injured LaGenesis Johnson and played well, according to coach Miranda Worrell. “While her stats weren't leading, she played well and we got several points while she served.”
Johnson missed the match due to a knee injury. “It's mostly precautionary time off, nothing major,” Worrell said.
Bellew served 100 percent against Pine Grove, had an assist, three solo blocks and a block assist. Miles had eight assists and served 100 percent, Molina served 90 percent with three aces, one solo block and a block assist and Addie Stacy served 100 percent with three aces and five digs. Mary Claire Cagle and Molly Kate Thomas served 100 percent, with two aces by Thomas, Hammons had five kills and Makenzie Sanders a solo block.
Miles, Stacy and Cagle all served 100 percent against Mantachie. Miles had 10 assists, Stacy 11 digs, four solo blocks and a block assist and Cagle a solo block. Molina had four kills and a block assist and Bellew two aces and a block assist.
Stats for the Walnut match:
Molina -- 14 service receptions, four digs and two block assists.
Stacy – four kills, four digs and two block assists.
Hammons – 100 percent serving, one ace and a solo block.
Cagle – four kills.
Bellew – three block assists.
Neele Ryan Crowley – two aces.
Miles – one block assist.
Choctaw County played Nanih Waiya Tuesday and will be at Amory Thursday in Class I, Region 4 matches. Prior to the Nanih Waiya match, Choctaw County had a 4-0 region record.
Grace Christian takes two wins

The Grace Christian volleyball team won two matches and lost one last week. The Lady Eagles were beaten by a strong Choctaw County team 25-20, 25-20, 25-14, but rebounded a day later to with a hard fought victory over Amory Christian 25-23, 25-19, and an easy win over and Mt. Zion Christian of Magee 25-9, 25-8.
“There was some good and bad,” coach Jamey Willers said of the Choctaw County match. “I felt like our attack got more powerful.”
Maggie Phillips had three aces and six service points. Lenleigh Dobbs had six service points, seven digs and 11 service receptions, Jasmine Kelly seven kills and three blocks, Caroline Robbins seven digs, Bella Browlee led in assists with 11 and Anna Howell served five points.
Willers said her players were very focused against Amory Christian. “They came out with an attitude that they could do it. They were moving well.”
Against Amory Christian, Carly Peterson had five aces and four kills, Dobbs four digs and 11 service receptions, Annabell Crowder five assists, Phillips seven service points, Howell three kills and Kelly three blocks.
Robbins had a strong service match against Mt. Zion with six aces and 11 points. Crowder had three assists, Howell and Phillips three kills each and Kelly three blocks.
The Lady Eagles played Heritage Academy Monday and have a match at Starkville Thursday. Heritage is a rematch of a tight five set loss by Grace Christian last month. Starkville is one of the state’s strongest team, ranked sixth by the website MaxPreps, with a straight set victories over Choctaw County and Heritage.
Grace Christian’s junior varsity team will play in a tournament Saturday at Infinity Volleyball Academy in Flowood.
