The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the season here Thursday night with a 68-59 win over the Southern Arkansas University Tech Lady Rockets.
Holmes travels to Jones Monday at 5:30 p.m. before returning home on Thursday for the home opener vs. Hinds at 5:30 p.m.
SAU Tech led after one period 15-13 before the Lady Bulldogs took a 34-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. SAU Tech outscored the Lady Bulldogs 21-19 in the third before the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Rockets 15-12 in the final period to pull out the win.
Gabrielle Bunch led the Lady Bulldogs with 24 points while Shawanda Gray had 14. Bunch finished with nine rebounds while Zaniyah Bogan had seven.
The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs had a strong first half in their season opener but couldn't hang on as the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves won the non-division contest 75-56.
The teams battled to open the game, and Co-Lin led 15-13 after one period. Sophomore guard/forward Brysa Maxwell of Ackerman hit a three-pointer with 6:35 left before halftime to tie the game at 21. She then added a free throw with 4:45 to put Holmes up by one at 24-23. The Lady Bulldogs led 35-30 at halftime.
Co-Lin stretched the lead to 56-45 after three periods and led by 10 points with 2:45 left.
Freshman guard Jordan Manning of Canton led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points while Maxwell had 14.
HCC MEN

SAU Tech led 31-26 at halftime, and the Bulldogs outscored the Rockets 45-41 in the second half, but it wasn't enough.
Kaleb Higgins led the Bulldogs in scoring with 19 points while Tyler Williams had 19 and Jaylen Lester had 12. Josiah Lewis had 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The Holmes Community College Bulldogs put two players --- Higgins and Lewis ---- in double figures in the season opener here Monday night at Copiah-Lincoln defeating the Wolves, 65-52.
The Bulldogs jumped out early in the contest and held a 10-3 lead with 15:22 left in the first half. A Higgins three-point gave Holmes a 22-17 lead with 4:58 left in the first half. Co-Lin battled back and took a 27-24 lead with a minute to play.
Freshman forward David Brown of Jackson scored five points in the last minute of the half to put Holmes up 29-27 at halftime. Brown hit two bucket and made a free throw.
Higgins, a freshman guard from Pine Bluff, Ark., scored 23 points while Lewis, a sophomore guard from Grenada had 14 points. Freshman forward Amadou Traore from Harlem, N.Y. led the Bulldogs in rebounds with eight.
