Choctaw County native Mandy Jewell is the new Choctaw County High School girls head basketball coach. She was promoted from assistant coach to replace Cory Guyton, who left to become girls coach at Kosciusko.
“I'm extremely excited,” she said. “I was hoping some day to come back here. I just wanted to make sure it was the right time and I had plenty of experience under my belt.”
Jewell graduated from Ackerman High School in 2003. She attended Blue Mountain College and played basketball for two years, then finished at Mississippi State, earning an education degree.
In addition to her coaching duties, Jewell is an eighth grade science teacher.
Jewell was head coach at East Webster, then was Choctaw County assistant coach for one year. The Lady Chargers finished 23-11 and reached the quarterfinals of the 3A state tournament.
“She was a big part of why we were as successful as we were,” Guyton said. “She is going to be a great asset to Choctaw County and the community. She was a great assistant.”
Choctaw County athletic director Ben Ashley also had praise for Jewell. “She's very qualified,” he said. “She has head coaching experience. She has great familiarity with our kids.”
