The Grace Christian girls basketball team played six games in four days, winning three and losing three.
The Lady Eagles had four games in one day at a double elimination tournament hosted by the Meridian Flyers. They finished second out of three teams with two wins and two losses.
In the opener, Grace Christian jumped out to a 12-2 first quarter lead against Meridian, but the Flyers rallied for a 26-25 victory. Caroline Robbins led Grace Christian with 17 points.
The Lady Eagles stayed alive with wins over Mt. Zion 31-27 and Meridian 29-24 before losing to the Flyers 28-16 in the championship game.
“At that point, we were done,” coach Talor Troyer said of the final game. “We played four games in a row. We had nothing left.”
Tamia Brewer had 13 points and Robbins 11 against New Zion. Brewer was also the team’s high scorer in the final two games against the Flyers with 14 and 7 points.
The Lady Eagles lost to the Laurel Knighthawks 55-23, but rebounded with a 47-35 victory over Amory Christian. Brewer had 10 points against Laurel and 17 in the win over Amory. Robbins totaled 18 points for the two games.
BOYS
Fourth quarter woes contributed to the Eagles dropping two of three games last week. Grace Christian was defeated by the Laurel Knighthawks 62-43 and Amory Christian 61-46 before defeating North New Summit of Greenwood 59-34.
Grace Christian trailed Laurel by only three points, 43-40, entering the fourth quarter, but was outscored 19-11 over the final eight minutes. Against Amory, it was 37-37 through three quarters before the Eagles were outscored 24-9 in the final period.
Alex Traylor was the team’s high scorer in both games with 23 points against Laurel and 19 against Amory. Zach Boyles had 13 in the Amory game.
Grace Christian jumped out to a 33-14 halftime lead over North New Summit and breezed to the win.
Taylor led three Eagles in double figures with 14 points. Boyles had 12 and Jacob Hogue 10.
It was the Eagles second easy win over North New Summit following a 73-42 victory in the final game of 2018.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles were set to play French Camp Tuesday. The boys will host a six-team tournament Saturday, with each team playing at least two games.
