Choctaw County High School is set to initiate girls golf this spring.
“We’re starting a girls program that we are very excited about,” said Gary Beals, who will coach the girls and boys teams. “I have six or seven (girls) coming out and I’m looking forward to it. It’s a chance to get scholarships. A lot of schools are playing it.”
He said golf gives girls “more activities and more things to do.”
The boys team finished fifth at the MHSAA 3A tournament last year with a two-round team score of 713 at Patrick Farms Golf Club in Pearl. The Chargers qualified for the state tournament by winning Region 2-3A for the fourth consecutive year.
Returning from that team are junior Preston Payne, who led the Chargers at the state tournament with rounds of 82 and 86, junior Spencer Power, and sophomore Brian Threadgill.
They will be joined by four freshmen, Colin Clark, Connor Jewell, Cole Vowell and Paxton Hammons.
The boys first match will be March 7 at Kosciusko County Club. The girls will begin play after spring break.
Ackerman County Club is the home course for both teams.
