East Webster grad Luke Wilson has signed to continue his football career at Mississippi College after two years at Holmes Community College.
“I went up there and really enjoyed the campus,” Wilson said of the Division II school in Clinton. “I like the defense they have. I think it fits me.”
He said MC uses a 3-3 defense, similar to the Holmes defense where he played linebacker this year. Despite missing the final two games with a high ankle sprain, Wilson (5-11 and 215 pounds) had 36 solo tackles, 15 assists, 8 tackles for losses and 4½ sacks.
He was a special teams player as a freshman because Holmes had three sophomores at linebacker who signed with Division I schools. “He was a solid player as a freshman, just couldn’t break into the starting lineup,” said Holmes head coach Jeff Koonz. “He worked hard, bided his time, and put himself in a position to be a starter the next year.”
Wilson pointed out that Don Yanowsky took over as the Holmes defensive coordinator his sophomore year. “He put me in good spots for my talent. In the spring, they (coaches) told me that they believed in me.”
Koonz said Wilson was “a coach on the field” for the Bulldogs. “He’s a very intelligent player. Being a coach’s son helps a lot.”
He played for his father, Doug Wilson, at East Webster. “He does the little things right,” said the senior Wilson. “He wasn’t the best athlete on the field, but he worked hard. I’m most proud of him because he stuck with it and had a good spring. He earned a starting spot.”
Wilson plans to major in criminal justice at MC. “I’m going to a really good school. I’ll get there and see where it takes me.”
Koonz said “They’re getting the total package. He’s an outstanding character player.”
MC competes in the Gulf South Conference which also includes Delta State.
