WINONA – French Camp won the Division 5-1A boys track championship and was the girl winners for a short time.
“They gave us the trophy and declared us the winner. Then I got a call a couple of hours later from the meet director (Winona coach Chris McRae) that there was a mistake,” French Camp coach Joe Watkins said.
A review showed that Ethel edged French Camp by one point for the girls title.
French Camp won seven boys events and six girls events.
Junior Colby Walters led the boys team with victories in the 800 with a time of 2:16 and 1600 (5:12). He also finished second to teammate Adlai Urbina in the 400 with a clocking of 55.12 and anchored the quartet that won the 1600 relay in 4:06.
Urbina, a junior won the 400 in 54.79, was second behind Waters in the 800 (2:20) and ran on winning 1600 relay teams. “He's really strong,” Watkins said.
The other 1600 relay runners were freshman Jake Seawright and junior Phillip Carradine.
Other boys winners were freshman Josh Deal in the 3200 (14:20), senior James Fowler in the discus (104-8¾) and the 3200 relay team comprised of Deal, Seawright, seventh grader Lyric Owens and freshman Eric McKinney,
Senior Ami Sherrif was a double winner in the girls meet with victories in the 800 (2:56) and 1600 (6:18). Other winners were sophomore Tessa Mullins in the 3200 (17:29), freshman Maddi Davis in the 100 hurdles (19.62), freshman Jasmine Bonty in the discus (73-1½) and the 3200 relay team of Mullins, Davis, Sherrif and seventh grader Averie Jane Gundy with a time of 15:29.
The top four in each event advance to the Region 3-1A meet Friday at Winona High School.
Other boys qualifiers: Carradine, second in the 100 (13.5), second in the 200 (24.84) and second in the long jump (18-3); Deal, second in the 1600 (5:54) and third in the 300 hurdles (57.47); Seawright, second in the 300 hurdles (55.12) and third in the 110 hurdles (20.67); McKinney, second in the 3200 (14:58) and third in the 1600 (5:58); Owens, third in the 3200 (16:39); Fowler, fourth in the shot put (33-2); and junior Julian Kay, fourth in the discus (80-3½).
Other girls who qualified: Gundy, second in the 1600 (6:56), Davis, second in the 300 hurdles (54.24); Bonty, second in the shot put (27-11), freshman Neviah Gathright, third in the 100 (14.75), third in the 400 (1:10.23) and fourth in the 200 (31.41); Mullins, third in the 1600 (7:37); freshman Emma Wright, fourth in the 400 (1:12.45) and the 1600 relay team, second with a time of 4:47.
