Mitchell McCurry felt the time was right to become a head coach and Ethel athletic director Corey Parish agreed.
McCurry is the new boys basketball and boys track coach at Ethel after two years as a football and basketball assistant at East Webster, his alma mater. “I thought it was time to go after a head coaching job,” he said.
Parish coached boys and girls basketball at Ethel last season, but will split chores with McCurry. Parish had been the boys coach for 14 years and the girls coach for one year.
McCurry, a Maben native, graduated from East Webster in 2008 where he played football as a wide receiver and basketball. He also played football at East Mississippi Community College before going on to Ole Miss, with a degree in secondary education and math.
He spent two years as a football and basketball assistant at Louisville before returning to East Webster where he also coached track.
McCurry plans to employ a full court man to man defense. “Offensively, we're very athletic so I'm going to run a lot of motion to get my better players space for one on one opportunities.”
Under MHSAA reclassification, Ethel boys and girls will be competing in Region 5-1A with French Camp, McAdams, Nanih Waiya, Noxapater and West Lowndes.
