After two losses to open the season, the Eupora football team took out all of their frustrations on visiting French Camp on Friday night.
The Eagles scored on their first two possessions and used some big plays in the second half to pull away and take a 54-20 win over French Camp. The Eagles improve to 1-2 on the season with the win and will travel to Union this week.
After two tough losses to start the season, the win over French Camp helped everyone’s feelings last week.
“I think everybody felt a whole lot better after Friday night,” Edwards said. “French Camp is a well coached football team. They have some guys who can make some plays and they can put you in a bind on defense. They can go two tights and it makes you do some things that you don’t like. I thought it would be a lot closer than it was. It kind of got away from them in the end. But we will take whatever we can get at this point.
The Eagles got the ball to start the game and needed just six plays to go 70 yards as Travon McMillian scored on a 1-yard TD run. Kimble Dillinger’s PAT was good and Eupora led 7-0.
After a French Camp punt, the Eagles went 41 yards in three plays as Tra McComb scored on a 33-yard run. Dillinger’s PAT was good and Eupora led early in the first quarter.
French Camp answered back as they scored on a 60-yard touchdown run. The try for two failed and Eupora led 14-6.
The scored stayed at 14-6 through the rest of the first and Eupora didn’t score again until the second play of the second quarter as Cade Atkins hit Daniel Brown on a 55-yard touchdown pass. Dillinger’s PAT was good and Eupora led 21-6.
After another French Camp punt, the Eagles went 55 yards in three plays as McComb scored on a 50-yard run to take a 28-6 lead.
French Camp added another score in the second as Eupora led 28-14 at the half.
“We knew we had to get Tra the ball more,” Edwards said. “He made some big runs for us and so did some of our other kids. We have some playmakers and had guys like Travon McMillian run the ball really well. We had some guys step in on the offense line that did a good job. I thought we did a good job up front. I think those guys are getting better every week. We had some new faces up there and I thought they stepped up.”
The Eagles forced French Camp to punt to begin the second half. The Eagles then went 70 yards in six plays as McComb scored o a 10-yard run to go up 35-14.
After each team turned the ball over on downs, French Camp got loose on an 80-yard run to cut the lead to 35-20. But the Eagles response as McComb scored on a 55-yard run on Eupora ensuing possession to take a 41-20 lead.
The Eagles added two more scored in the second half as McMillian scored on a 1-yard run to make the score 47-20 while Ty Murphy bucked a punt and Jessie Suddeth retuned it 22 yards for a touchdown for the final margin.
Cade Atkins was 7-of-11 passing for 159 yards and one TD. The Eagles ran for 360 yards as McComb rushed for 258 yards and five touchdowns. McMillian had 68 yards on 15 carries. Brown had three catches for 85 yards while Tyjuan Hughes had two catches for 41 yards. McComb had five catches for 23 yards.
On defense, Zak Morris led the Eagles with eight tackles while Deunte Watson and McMillian each had seven tackles apiece. Kyle Kilgore, Orlandes Gray, and Payton Collums each had five tackles while Darius Brown, Landon Davis, McComb and Quetarious Carr each had four tackles apiece.
