The Eupora tennis team won two out of three matches this past week and were one court away from taking all three.
Eupora started the week off with a solid 6-1 over Houston on Monday and then lost a hard-fought 4-3 match against French Camp on Thursday. They bounced back on Saturday as they took a 4-3 win over Mooreville on Saturday to finish out the week.
Eupora will return to action this week as they travel to Kosciusko on Monday and will host the Mississippi School for Math and Science on Tuesday in a division contest. On Friday, Eupora will travel to Oak Hill in West Point to finish out the week.
Eupora 6, Houston 1
The Eagles won six out of seven courts to take a win over Class 4A Houston on Monday.
The Eagles won all matches that the girls were involved in. In girls singles, Belle Powell needed a third set to take the win as she won 6-2, 3-6, 10-6. In girls doubles, Wesleigh Cummings and Lillian Winter won 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot while Jasi Brooke Galloway and Madison Goodrum won 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Grant Frank and Gracie Burton took a 6-1, 6-0 win.
In boys doubles, John Thomas Frank and Garrett Crimm took a solid 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Cliff Jernigan and Woods Mitchell needed a third-set tiebreaker to get the win. After losing the first set 6-3, Jernigan and Mitchell fought back to win the second set 6-4 and then won the third set tiebreaker 14-12 to take the match. In boys singles, Walker Mitchell fell 6-0, 6-1.
French Camp 4, Eupora 3
The Eagles dropped a one-point match to French Camp on Thursday.
The Eagles got both points in girls doubles as Wesleigh Cummings and Lillian Winter won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot while Jasi Brooke Galloway and Madison Goodrum won 7-6, 1-6, 10-4 in a third-set tiebreaker. In girls singles, Belle Powell dropped a tight match, falling 6-4, 6-2.
The mixed doubles team picked up Eupora’s other point as Grant Frank and Gracie Burton came back from a first-loss to get the win. Frank and Burton lost the first set 6-4 but fought back to win 7-6, 10-4. In boys doubles, Garett Crimm and John Thomas Frank lost a tough match as they fell 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot. In No. 2 boys doubles, Cliff Jernigan and Woods Mitchell lost 6-1, 6-4.
Eupora 4, Mooreville 3
The Eagles used a strong showing on the boys side to take a one-match win over Mooreville on Saturday.
In boys doubles, John Thomas Frank and Garrett Crimm cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot while Cliff Jernigan and Woods Mitchell won 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Grant Frank and Gracie Burton took the point were leading 4-1 when the match had to be called. In boys singles, Walker Mitchell fell 6-2, 6-2.
