Some of the best high school football players in Northeast Mississippi will get one last time on the field this week and Webster County will be well represented.
The The Northeast Mississippi Football Coaches Association All-Star game is set for this week at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.
Players reported for practice on Monday and the game will be played on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Eupora coach Stephen Edwards was named as the head coach for the South squad while Oxford’s Chris Cutcliffe will be the head coach for the North squad.
“We have got a lot of kids playing in this who have already signed somewhere,” Edwards said. “It’s amazing at the talent on this team. The entire offensive line has already signed somewhere. There were a lot of good players who didn’t get picked for this game.”
From Eupora, their lone representative is quarterback/linebacker Edwin Herard. From East Webster, Keevon Patterson, Noah Hatcher and Hunter Dendy were also selected.
“Edwin is going to play a little bit of everything for us, sort of like he did during the regular season,” Edwards said. “We’ve got the three kids from East Webster and all of them will see a lot of playing time. There were about a 100 kids nominated and we have got 45 kids who are going to play. We’ve got kids from Pontotoc and Shannon all the way to Winston Academy.”
Edwards said the coaches group gives away six $800 scholarships and players get to keep their jersey and also receive a backpack filled with goodies.
Also joining Edwards on his coaching staff is Thad Walker and Josh Glasner. Edwards said Walker will be his defensive coordinator while Brad Gray from Calhoun. City will be the offensive coordinator. Eupora assistant coach Adam Dillinger will serve as a scout team coach for the South squad. Also on the coach staff is East Webster assistant coach Mitchell McCurry.
