It’s district time in Webster County and the Eupora Eagles are looking to start things off on the right foot as a new slate begins.
For the Eupora Lady Eagles, second-year head coach Jonathan Childs has seen how difficult this district can be and he’s running right into the traffic this week. The Lady Eagles go on the road to play Calhoun City and East Webster and they’re hoping to get better as a team because of it. After a 1-9 start to the year, Childs is looking for improvement each game.
“It’s been interesting because we had some players move or no longer play so it’s put players in significantly different situations than last year,” Childs said of this season. “M’Nyjah Young might have averaged five points a game last year and now she’s around double figures and she’s pushing the ball up the floor and calling plays. Success hasn’t come with it, but we’ve learned a lot. We just need to play good competition so we can see what the standard is at what we want to be.”
The Webster county rivals have already played this year with the Lady Wolverines coming out on top on the road and Calhoun City is always one of the favorites to win the district.
The Eupora boys are in the first season under head coach Ross Robinson and they’ve gotten off to a 1-9 start. Last week did bring the first win of the season to the team as they beat the Vardaman Rams by two points and they head into Class 2A, Region 2 play with some confidence.
Both teams are looking for marquee wins and they’ve got a renewed sense of optimism this week as they start a new season. The slate is clean and it’s time for the real games to begin.
“Everything is preparing for district tournament. These are two of the best teams in our district and we play them right away,” Childs said. “Hopefully we’re going to learn a lot and get better this week.”
